A Guide to Getting the Most from this Book
• Read the Book. Ask everyone to read the book and then
ask, “If you could only select just one thing to do that would immediately improve our meetings, what would it be?” Facilitate a discussion of the answers.
• Start with a Meeting Assessment. Get the “Team Meet- ing Assessment” or some other meeting assessment instrument and ask everyone to complete it. Summarize the results and then facilitate a discussion focused on ways to improve your meetings in the future.
• Facilitate an Informal Assessment. At the end of a meeting, ask members to brainstorm things that are going well and should be continued and things that should be changed or added. When a few issues emerge, ask everyone to read those sections of this book. Then ask them to return to the next meeting with ideas for improving your meetings in the future.
• Take One Step at a Time. Devote 15-30 minutes of each meeting to a discussion of one of the tools in this book.
• Let Members Take the Lead. Ask each team member to take responsibility for leading a discussion on one of the 20 tools at a subsequent meeting.
• Use the Book as a Pre-Program Assignment. Get people thinking about meetings prior to attending a training session on the topic by reading this book and answering some questions.
• Use the Book as a Follow-up Assignment. Give this book out at the end of a program on meetings with an assignment to read the whole book or parts not covered during the training.
