Scholarly Research Requirements:
The News Report asked you to think like a journalist or a consumer of the news. Now, the Research Component asks you to think like a Women’s Studies’ scholar: How does the information reported in the news article connect to scholarly research in the field? What do scholars already know that can deepen our understanding of the information reported in the article?
This assignment will also provide an orientation to the interdisciplinary scholarly resources available for Women’s Studies’ students and scholars.
First (1), visit the Research Guide for Women’s Studies at the UMGC Library. Spend some time exploring the available resources.

Second (2), using any of the databases or eresources available in the Research Guide, research some aspect of your news article. You should be looking for scholarly resources. If the first database or set of resources returns few options or only news articles and not scholarly articles, choose another database. You could focus on the main topic of the article (such as the gender wage gap, or women in the military), on a specific person discussed in the article (such as an activist, or a politician), or on a location discussed in the article (such as women in the Midwest, or women in Nigeria), or on a related idea (such as the history of cosmetics, or female-centered religions). Remember to maintain a focus on a topic of interest to Women’s Studies.
Third (3), choose two of the scholarly resources you discover, and write an annotated bibliography of 500-800 words as described here. Chosen resources should be no more than 10 years old.

1. Title, author, publication, date, and url for the news article.
The title of the article chosen is “Women in STEM: 3 Challenges we face ̶ and how to overcome them.” The article was published in Aug 2021 in College Voices column of CNBC with url as https://www.cnbc.com/2021/08/09/women-in-stem-3-challenges-we-face-and-how-to-overcome-them.html. The author of the article is Sabiha Farheen. The article particularly handles the challenges that women gender faces in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) field.
2. Brief (1-2 sentence) summary of the main topic of the article.
This article identifies the challenges as field acceptance, individual confidence, and inadequate functional women mentors in the field. These challenges pose a good position to design appropriate structures, strategies and policies to mitigate the challenges and embrace women gender in STEM field, to promote equitable professional society.
3. Why would this article be of particular interest to a Women’s Studies student or scholar?
The message in this study is peculiar and accounts for the existing disparity among female gender in the STEM field. Sabiha Farheen’s article provides detailed information on the causative issues that make women job acceptance and security in STEM. According to the article, the world seems to put unrealistic pressure on the women ability in STEM field while at the same time disregarding the potential of those already performing in the sector with low and disproportionate pay. The article provides support for the female gender to identify themselves with the STEM field buy joining hands and fighting for their employment rights collectively. In this article, women are encouraged to form a tangible force that identifies their inherent weakness of the female gender and collectively fight it to achieve high academic and professional goals like male counterparts. Again, the article provides hope for the women in STEM fields by providing the statistical data that proves it is possible for women to occupy and perform even better in STEM field. This professional, physical, and emotional support is important in stirring women to greater heights in the STEM world thus promoting job place diversity and inclusivity. Although Marlee Kopetsky notes that women face a huge challenge of securing a job and being accepted in the STEM fields, a study by U.S. Census Bureau uplifts the female gender by indicating a drastic change of the percentage of women working in STEM field. The study indicates that by 2017, over 27% of employees in STEM field were women. In 1970, the percentage population of women in STEM was 8%. This is an indication of continued change of the mindset of the general employees and employers in references to equity and individual abilities regardless of gender.
4. What did you learn that you didn’t already know by reading this article?
After reading the article, I leant that most women do not know the salary scale of STEM professionals. This puts them in a salary disparity corner without notice and insight to find out what is expected of them in terms of the remuneration among other employment benefits. For example, research conducted by U.S. Census Bureau found out that men earned more than women in over 70 STEM fields except computer network architects.
5. Which topic, person, example, or idea in the article would you like to know more about? What questions would you suggest the reporter ask in a follow-up article?
Reading this article fortified my interest in seeking to know historical events of women in the employment market. For example, what differences exist among gender functionality and pays? Moreover, I would wish to understand more on the salary scales and ranks of experts in STEM in various countries, reasons behind the salary disparity among men and women, and the differences in tasks allocated to women in STEM field compared to men counterparts. In this I would pose to ask, “Are women capable of performing similar tasks and responsibilities men do in STEM field?”
6. What social, political, personal, historical, economic, artistic, or other impact might the information in this article have? Why?
Politically, the article opens a debate that should initiate investigation that identifies the policy that promotes gender disparity among gender in workplace. Socially, this article calls on women to join hands and conduct research on STEM salary scales and voice it up together. Joining hands and advocating for women empowerment policies in the STEM field is also anchored in the article. For example, Weinberg pointed out that students should join with alumni in the field to establish the salary scale, challenges, and aftermath for equitable platform in the field.
7. Is there anything you read or thought about while reading the article that has relevance to your life outside of this class or outside of the article itself?
The article opened my eyes in terms of connecting to mentors and alumni in my field to identify more issues and learn to go around them. The article strengthens individual women to arise and seek economic equity in workplace. This impacts the workplace organizational structure to save women gender from disproportionate economic considerations in STEM field (Farheen, 2021).

Scholarly Research: Sexism and Sexual Harassment in the Military
I decided to explore the topic of sexism and sexual harassment in the military. I chose this topic because I was not very familiar with this problem that many women face in the military. The article that I read last week was centered around female veterans’ experiences with sexism and discrimination at the V.A. Hospital. I decided that I wanted to know more about this topic as well as how women who are actively serving are affected. I found a lot of great articles in the Women’s Studies database by using the keywords sexism and military. I also made sure to refine my search to peer-reviewed journals as well.

This research journal article investigated what type of experience female veterans would have when they received family planning counseling at two different V.A. Hospitals. Their findings were that nearly all of the female veterans experienced some type of gender-based discrimination (Callegari, et al., 2019, “Negative experiences”).
Many of the women who were seeking contraceptive methods reported feeling like their doctors were pressuring them to use a certain kind (Callegari, et al., 2019, “Perceived pressure”). Another woman felt as though she couldn't talk honestly with her doctor because of a fear of being discriminated against not only because of her gender but also her race (Callegari, et al., 2019, “Perceived judgment”). One woman who suffered from PTSD stated that when she told her male doctor about her problems that he “blew her off” and told her that it was “all in her head” (Callegari, et al., 2019, “Perceived gender-based discrimination”). Out of all 32 female veterans who participated in the study only a few were able to say that they did not receive any type of discrimination (Callegari, et al., 2019, “Positive experiences”).
The research journal article relates to the news article because it backs up the topics that were discussed. The female veterans who participated in the study still received discrimination even after going to a hospital that specializes in women’s care. One of the solutions suggested in the news article to help fix this problem was to bring in more women specialized in women’s care to help female veterans (Steinhauer, 2019, para. 21). But this research journal article shows that even if that was the case women would still receive discrimination. Both of these resources also pointed out the fact that the number of female veterans is only going to keep rising, so something needs to be done about this problem right away. This research journal deepened my understanding by providing multiple examples of the type of discrimination that the female veterans were experiencing and then showing what could have been done better to make the women feel more comfortable.

This research journal article was already aware of the numerous studies that were done on women experiencing sexual harassment in the military, so they decided to focus their research on the methods that women use to keep themselves safe (Cheney, et al., 2015, p.1). They concluded that women use a number of strategies such as wearing non-feminine clothing to blend in, having support networks, and using their rank as a “barrier” (Cheney, et al., 2015, p.8). These findings show that women have to go through so much to protect themselves which can, in turn, affect their overall health and well-being. Rank played a huge role in this experiment as well. The researchers concluded that women who were of a higher rank were almost immune to harassment because of their social status. In response to this, higher-ranking females would often take lower-ranking females under their wing to help protect them (Cheney, et al., 2015, p.9).
The research journal article and news article show that discrimination and sexual harassment are everywhere in the military and it does not matter if you are actively serving or a veteran. The women in the news article I read also had to find ways to protect themselves just like the women in the research journal. One example showed how women would write down descriptions of men that they see just in case they have to report them for sexual assault (Steinhauer, 2019, para. 19). It is sad that women have to deal with this type of harassment when they are deployed and away from their families as well as in their own communities. This research article deepened my understanding by showing me that women have to fight and stand up for themselves wherever they go. It also made me realize how far this problem has spread throughout the military and made me wonder if we will ever see the end of it.
